Gave Dust Of Their Feet For Curing Krsna's Headache

Radharani’s love is indeed great in all respect in comparison to anyone else including the queens of Lord Krishna.

Indeed the queens are the expansion of Lakshmi, wife of Shri Vishnu but the following story will prove Radha’s supremacy over Rukmini and the other queens.

This story is from the book ‘The Glories and Pastimes of Shrimati Radharani’.

‘Once Narada Muni went to Dwaraka to meet with Shri Krishna. There he found Krishna suffering from a headache.

Shri Krishna told Narada, “Devarsi! Today I am suffering from a severe headache. If I do not get the proper medicine before sunset my life will be at risk.”

Devarsi became worried and asked Krishna, “My Lord! Please let me know what kind of medicine you need to be cured.”

Krishna said, “I need the foot dust of my devotees. If I put this dust on my head, I will be cured.”

Narada said, “There is no difficulty at all. You have unlimited devotees all over the unlimited universes.”

Confident of the ease of the mission, Narada Muni went straight to Krishna’s Queen, Rukmini and informed her of Krishna’s request.

Rukmini replied, “O Devarsi! It is a matter of great concern that our husband is suffering from severe headache. But how can I give the dust of my feet to put on the head of my husband? This is adharma. He is my Lord. I will suffer in hell if a particle of dust from my feet touches the head of my Lord.”

Then Narada Muni went to all other queens but none of them would give the dust of their feet for the same reason.

Then Narada Muni went to all other devotees including Shiva and Brahma but nobody gave their foot dust. Meanwhile the headache of Krishna intensified.

After that Narada Muni went to Vrindavan and asked everyone but nobody gave their foot dust.

At last he saw Radharani with her sakhis on the banks of Yamuna.

He straightaway went to them and asked for their foot dust.

Radha said, “Devarsi Narada! We are not great devotees of the Lord. Still if he has mercifully considered us as His devotees then immediately we are ready to give the dust of our feet.”

Immediately Radharani collected the dust of her feet and gave it to Narada Muni.

Thus encouraged by her sakhi, all the Gopis gave their foot dust too.

Narada thought to himself that these simple cowherd girls do not know the reactions that they will suffer when their lord will smear their foot dust on his head.

He asked the Gopis if they knew the consequence of giving their foot dust to the Lord.

With one voice the Gopis replied, “Yes, we know. If by giving the foot dust we will have to suffer hell eternally, then we will happily make this special contract with Yamraja and go to Yamaloka. In exchange, we simply want to see that our most beloved, who is our life’s breathe is, become cured from his headache. His happiness is our life. We do not know any pleasure other than the pleasure of Shri Krishna. What does it matter if we must go to hell?”

Narada Muni with great ecstasy left for Dwaraka.

When he reached there, Krishna smiled and said, “Narada! You have brought the foot dust of the Gopis . Now my disease is cured. Just see!

You consider yourself a great devotee of mine. Why could you not give the dust of your feet at the beginning? However, this has taught you one thing: now you should know these Gopis of Vrindavan are my greatest devotees. They have given their life to me.”

Shri Rama Vaikuntha / Temple / Tube

In the Garga Samhita, Sri Narada Muni explains to Sri Bahulashva, the story of the other gopis, a sacred story that removes all sins, and increases one’s love for Lord Krishna.

The six Vrishabhanus:
  1. Nitivit,
  2. Margada,
  3. Shukla,
  4. Patanga,
  5. Divyavahana, and
  6. Gopeshta, were born in Vraja.
In their homes, by a benediction granted by Lord Narayana,

were born the girls of
  1. Rama-Vaikuntha,
  2. Urdhva-Vaikuntha,
  3. Lokacala, and
  4. Ajitapada,
who had all been born from the ocean of milk and who were all friends of the goddess of fortune.

Always thinking of Lord Krishna’s lotus feet, to gain His favor, they followed the vow of Magha-Vrata.
On the fifth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Magha (January-February), as springtime was about to begin, to test their love for Him, Lord Krishna went to these gopis’ homes dressed in a tiger skin, His hair matted, and His natural opulences concealed, by playing the flute he enchanted all the worlds.

Seeing Him on the path, the enchanted gopis were overcome with love.

To gaze at Him, they came close. As they gazed at this very handsome yogi,

the blissful gopis spoke among themselves. The gopis said: “Who is this? Is this Nanda’s son or the son of a wealthy king?

Is He renounced
  1. because His heart was broken by a woman’s harsh words or
  2. because He has performed many pious deeds?

He is very handsome. His features are graceful and delicate. Like Kamadeva, He charms the hearts of the entire world.

Ah! How can He live without mother, father, sister, and wife?”

Filled with wonder and love, the assembled girls of Vraja asked many questions.

The gopis said:
  1. “O yogi, who are You?
  2. What is Your name?
  3.  O sage, where do You live?
  4. What do You do?
  5. What mystic powers have You attained?
O best of eloquent speakers, please tell us.”

The perfect yogi said: “I am a Master of Yoga. I always stay at Mana-Sarovara.

  1. My name is Svayamprakasha.
  2. I never eat.
  3. My own mystic power keeps Me alive.
  4. O girls of Vraja, I have attained the great treasure of the Paramahamsas.
  5. I have spiritual eyes.
  6. I can see the past, present, and future.
  7. I know mantras that can ruin people, kill them, bewilder them, paralyze them, or bring them under My control.”

The gopis said: “O wise yogi, if You know the past, present, and future, then please tell us one thing: What are we thinking at this moment?”
The perfect yogi said: “The answer to this question I will now whisper in each girl’s ear, or, if you request, I will speak it aloud, so all may hear.”
The gopis said: “O sage, if it is true that You are a Master of Yoga, and if without doubt that You know the past, present, and future, and if by merely chanting a mantra You can actually bring others under Your control, then we think You must be the best of all mantra-chanters.”

The perfect yogi said: “Any impossible thing you ask, I can do. The words of saintly persons do not prove false. O girls don’t lament. Close your eyes and you will attain your wish.”

As the gopis stood with closed eyes, the Lord abandoned the form of a yogi and again became Krishna, the son of Nanda.
Opening their eyes, they happily gazed at Krishna, the son of Nanda. Delighted, filled with wonder, and now aware of His transcendental powers, the gopis fainted unconscious.
As Indra enjoys with the girls of Svarga Loka, so Lord Krishna enjoyed with these gopis in a great rasa-dance in sacred Vrindavana forest during the month of Magha.

Gopi Talav

Padma Purana explains that in one kalpa during Lord Sri Krishna's Bhauma Vrindavana (earthly) pastimes, the Vraja-gopis went near Dwarka to dance with their beloved in a secluded forest beside the sea, 20 km north of Dwarka on the night of Sharad Purnima (full moon) and once again danced with him. Krishna secretly left His palace, abandoned His royal insignias, robes, opulent crown and other trimmings of a King, and again adorned Himself in his gopa-vesh, simple dress of a Vrindavana cowherd boy - with a red turban and peacock feather atop His head, a flowing lightning gold dhoti and diaphanous yellow chaddar, a yellow karnikara flower stuck above one ear, a gunja berry necklace swinging from His neck, and His indomitable instrument - flute (murali).

After hours of wonderful dancing and transcendental expressions, Lord Sri Krishna took the Gopis to swim in a nearby lake to relieve their fatigue. All the body powders, unguents, oils and pastes of sandalwood, musk, jasmine, saffron and various colored minerals washed off their transcendental bodies as they splashed each other and played about. Unable to part from Krishna, the Gopis offered their lives to the soil of this land and merged with their beloved. It is said that they turned into yellow clay, known as Gopi Chandan. For the last fifty centuries Krishna bhaktas have been using this clay known as Gopi Chandan (it is golden color just like Radhika’s splendid limbs), to apply tilaka. The soil of the Gopi talav is extremely smooth and yellow in color.
