Krishna’s Friend Subal

One day Srimati Radharani made a very nice flower garland for Krishna and gave it to Vrindadevi. “You take and give this to Krishna.”

Vrindadevi thought, “ Subal Sakha is a priya-narma-sakhä. He is very dear to Krishna. If Subal Sakha takes it and gives it to Krishna, then Krishna will become very pleased.” So Vrindadevi gave the garland to Subal Sakha.

Krishna was sitting on the bank of Radha Kund. It was midday. Subal Sakha came and gave the garland to Krishna. Then he explained everything - who had prepared the garland, how it had come to his hand, and how he was handing it over.

Then Krishna said, “Oh! I was just sitting here thinking about Radharani when you brought Me Her garland. My mind is very much agitated. Please help Me, please help Me. Bring Radharani here. Please bring Radharani here. I want to meet with Her.”

Subal Sakha said, “Oh my friend, this is not a good time. It is noontime. It is quite impossible to bring Radharani here now. Oh, my friend, give up this hope. It is quite impossible.”

Krishna said, “But My dear friend, My mind is very restless and agitated. Unless you bring Radharani for Me then I will drown Myself in the Yamuna River and finish My life. I cannot survive.”

Subal thought, “Oh? My friend cannot survive? He will drown in the Yamuna? All right then, by hook or by crook, somehow I must bring Radharani and give pleasure to my friend.”

The friend’s mentality is to give pleasure. The sakhäs always understand Krishna’s mentality. They know what Krishna is thinking and how they can help Him and give Him pleasure. This is sakhya-rasa - madhura-rasa, sweet mellow. Such are the activities of the priya-narma-sakhäs. They are very dear to Krishna.

Suspicious Jatila

Subal Sakha is very expert in all these activities. He went to Yavat, Radharani’s father-in-law’s house. Radharani’s mother-in-law Jatila had just finished taking her lunch and was sitting at the doorstep facing the window of Radharani’s room. When she saw Subal, she said, “Hey! Why have you come here at noontime?” She knows, “Oh, this boy has come for some purpose. Yes. He’s a naughty boy.”

“Why are you coming here at this time?”

Then Subal, with much humility, said, “O mother! One of my calves is missing. I have searched all of the expected places, but I couldn’t find him. At last I have come here. He might be here. Mother, will you please go in and see if my calf is here? I will be freed from anxiety if I know if my calf is here or not.”

Jatila became very angry. “I ‘ve already taken my lunch. I can’t move myself. You go inside and see.”

He was expecting her to say that. It was very difficult to go inside because she was sitting at the doorstep. So he got the opportunity. All of Krishna’s léläs take place by the wonderful arrangement of Yogamaya.

Remembering Yogamaya, Subal Sakha prayed, and then entered into the inner apartment where Radharani was. He told everything to Radha. “Krishna is sitting there on the bank of Radha Kund intensely thinking of You. You have to go there, otherwise He will drown Himself in the Yamuna.”

Radharani said, “How will it be? This is an awkward time and My mother-in-law is sitting there at the doorstep. How can I go? How can I go?”

But what is impossible? If you are very anxious to do something, to give pleasure to Krishna, what is impossible? Krishna can do and undo things. Nothing is impossible for Krishna. Krishna gives the intelligence. Pure intelligence comes from Krishna. The Gétä (10.10) describes:

teñäà satata-yuktänäà bhajatäà préti-pürvakam

dadämi buddhi-yogaà taà yena mäm upayänti te

To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me.

Krishna says, “One who is satata-yuktä, constantly engaged in My bhajana with préti, with love, I give him pure intelligence.”

Radharani’s Disguise

So the intelligence came what should be done. Subal Sakha has the same appearance as Radharani. Subal Sakha said, “All right Radharani, You take my garments.” He gave his dhoti, his kurta, his turban, and everything to Radharani. “You put all of this on. Now, You give me Your sari. I will put on Your sari and remain here.” They exchanged clothes.

Then how to get out? The keen eyes of Radharani’s mother-in-law Jatila and Her sister-in-law Kutila are there on Radharani. How to get out?

Now that Radharani was dressed in his clothes, Subal Sakha told Her, “Pick up a calf. Hold the calf on Your breast like this, then go out.” Subal Sakha had come to get his calf.

She did as Subal told Her. Dressed in the form of Subal Sakha , She picked up a calf, pressed it to Her breast and passed through. When She came to where Jatila was sitting, Radharani as Subal Sakha said, “Mother, I got My calf.”

“Oh, You got Your calf? All right, very good. Now go away! Get out!”

Radharani got out and went to Radha Kund and met Krishna. Happy union.

However, Subal Sakha was still inside wearing Radharani’s sari. How was he going to get out? Another problem!

Generally, at noontime, the damsels of Vrajabhumi all go to Surya Kund to offer püjä to Suryadeva. Now was that time, so all the damsels of Vrajabhumi came out from their houses.

Jatila called out, “Oh, daughter-in-law! Daughter-in-law! Aren’t You going to go to Surya Kund to offer püjä to Suryadeva?”

Imitating Radha’s voice, Subal Sakha said, “Yes, yes, mother. I am going, I am going.” In this way Subal Sakha got out of the house and went to Radha-kunda. Krishna became very happy because Subal Sakha brought Radharani before Him. Krishna looked at Subal Sakha and both of them were laughing.

This is sakhya-rasa in vraja-lélä. The sakhäs, friends of Krishna, always help Krishna and give Him pleasure according to what He wants. Such are the loving dealings among friends. This pastime is known as subala-milana.

Gopas and Gopis With Cows Listening to Flute

School for Krishna

There is a continuous competition between Srimati Radharani and Lord Krsna to see who can most increase the intensity of the love which they have between them. She increases, He increases, She increases...there's no end to it. Neither of them wants to be defeated while increasing the intensity of Their love. Similarly, the beauty of Lord Krsna increases when He sees the beauty of the milkmaids. Concomitantly, the more the milkmaids see Lord Krsna's beauty, the more their beauty increases. In this way a competition takes place between them in which no one acknowledges defeat.

Now, Krsna becomes curious. He can understand this loving competition from His own angle of vision, but He does not understand what's going on in the mind of Srimati Radharani. He gets a desire to understand what it is like to be on the other side of this loving competition, and to understand this loving exchange from Her angle of vision. He becomes very curious about the mental activities of Srimati Radharani and Her attitude of ever-increasing love for Him.

Now, for Lord Krsna, it is not such a difficult thing to study the mental attitudes of Srimati Radhika, because Her mental attitudes are out there walking around in saris. Srimati Radharani expands Her mental attitudes as Her gopi girlfriends, all of whose activities are concentrated on the pastimes of Krsna. As expansions of Her personal form and transcendental disposition, they are agents of different loving reciprocations in Krsna's pastimes.

Therefore, Srimati Radharani and Her maidservants decide to help Krsna by setting up a school for Him at Radha Kunda. Radha is the Chancellor of this incomparable school, while Lalita and Visaka are the principal department heads. It is with their help that the only student, Lord Krsna, is then able to study with all those sakhis who are the personified mental activities of Srimati Radhika.

Radha and Candravali

One of the ways in which Radhika pleases Krsna is by entering into the loving stage called maan, Her sulky mood of affectionate jealous anger towards Him. Sometimes Her maan has no external cause, and sometimes it has a cause. The vipaksa (rival) gopis headed by Candravali criticize Radharani by saying, “She doesn’t feel ashamed or shy to do maan? I don’t want to see Her face.” On the other hand, Radhika criticizes Candravali, “Candravali knows nothing about pleasing a beloved. She doesn’t know how to do maan.” Candravali’s affection for Krsna is grta-sneha, very smooth. Radhika’s affection is madhu-sneha, like madhu, honey, which is smooth and also sweet. Candravali’s affection is compared with ghee, which needs sugar to become sweet, but madhu is sweet on its own.

Sata Koti Gopi - Rasa-lila Radha song

Jai Radha Madhav Jai Kunj Bihari Jai Gopi Jan Walabh

Purport to Jaya Rādhā-Mādhava
by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
New York, July 20, 1971

710720PU.NY

Prabhupāda: So you know this song Jaya Rādhā-Mādhava?

Devotees: Jaya!

Prabhupāda: So you can follow me?

Devotees: Jaya! Haribol! (Śrīla Prabhupāda leads singing of Jaya

Rādhā-Mādhava)

Prabhupāda: So this is the—sit down—original nature of Kṛṣṇa, original nature of Kṛṣṇa. He is Rādhā-Mādhava. He is the lover of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. And kuñja-vihārī, always enjoying the company of the gopīs within the bushes of Vrdavana forest. Rādhā-mādhava kuñja-vihārī. So He’s not only lover of Rādhārāṇī, but braja-jana- vallabha. The whole residents of Vṛndāvana, they love Kṛṣṇa. They do not know anything else. They do not know whether Kṛṣṇa is God, or not; neither they are very much harassed, that “I shall love Kṛṣṇa if He is God.” “He may be God or He may be whatever He is. It doesn’t matter, but we love God, Kṛṣṇa.” That’s all. That is called unnalloyed love. “If Kṛṣṇa is God, then I shall love Him”—this is conditional love. This is not pure love. Kṛṣṇa may be God or whatever He may be, but by His wonderful acts, the Vrajavāsī, they are thinking, “Oh Kṛṣṇa, He is very wonderful child, maybe some demigod. Maybe some demigod.” Because people are generally under impression that the demigods are all-powerful. They’re powerful within this material world. But they do not know that Kṛṣṇa is above all of them. Īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ sac-cid-ānanda- vigrahaḥ [Bs. 5.1]. The highest demigod, Brahmā, is giving his opinion, “The supreme controller is Kṛṣṇa.”

So as the residents of Vṛndāvana, they love Kṛṣṇa without any condition, similarly, Kṛṣṇa also loves them without any condition. Vraja-jana-vallabha giri-vara-dhārī. When the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana were in danger because they stopped Indra-yajña and Indra became very angry, and he sent very great, powerful cloud and rained over Vṛndāvana incessantly for seven days, so when the inhabitants became very much disturbed, Kṛṣṇa, although He was only seven years old boy, He saved them by lifting the Govardhana Hill. So He taught Indradeva, demigod, that “To stop your disturbance is the business of My little finger. That’s all.” So he came down to his knees. These things you’ll find in Kṛṣṇa book. So as the Gopī-jana-vallabha, His only business is how to protect gopī- jana. So our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is how to become one of the gopī-jana. Then Kṛṣṇa will save us from any danger, even by lifting a hill or mountain. Kṛṣṇa is so kind and so powerful. When Kṛṣṇa lifted the hill, He did not practice some yoga system. And that is God. Although He was a child, He was playing like a child, He was dealing like a child, but when there was need, He was manifesting as God. That is Kṛṣṇa. That is Kṛṣṇa, not that He has to go and practice some yoga system. Then He becomes God. No. He’s not that type of God, not manufactured God. He’s God.

So gopī-jana-vallabha giri-vara-dhārī. And as a child, as beloved child of Yaśodā, Yaśodā-nandana,… Kṛṣṇa likes to be a child of a devotee. He wants to be chastised from His devotee father and mother. Because everyone worships Him, nobody goes to chastise Him, so He takes pleasure when a devotee chastises Him. That is Kṛṣṇa’s service. If Kṛṣṇa takes pleasure being chastised, so the responsibility is taken by a devotee: “All right, I shall become Your father and chastise You.” When Kṛṣṇa wants to fight, one of His devotees becomes Hiraṇyakaśipu and fights with Him. So all activities of Kṛṣṇa is with His devotees. He is… Therefore, to become associate of Kṛṣṇa, to develop Kṛṣṇa consciousness… Yaśodā- nandana vraja-jana-vallabha, vraja-jana-rañjana. His only business is how to satisfy… As braja-jana’s business is how to satisfy Kṛṣṇa, similarly, Kṛṣṇa’s business is how to satisfy braja-jana. This is reciprocation of love. Yamunā-tīra-vana-cārī. Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is wandering on the banks of Yamunā to please the gopīs, the cowherd boys, the birds, beasts, calves. They are not ordinary birds, beasts, calves or men. They are on the top of self-realization. Kṛta-puṇya-puñjāḥ. After many, many lives they got that position, to play with Kṛṣṇa.

So our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is so nice that everyone can go to Kṛṣṇaloka and become His associate, as a friend or so many other things, as a servant, as father, as mother. And Kṛṣṇa is agreeable to any one of these propositions. These things are described very nicely in our Teachings of Lord Caitanya. So Kṛṣṇa does not go even a step from Vṛndāvana. The original Kṛṣṇa is Vṛndāvana. That is described in the Brahma-saṁhitā,

cintāmaṇi-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vṛkṣa- lakṣāvṛteṣu surabhīr abhipālayantam lakṣmī-sahasra-śata-sambrahma-sevyamānaṁ govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ (tam ahaṁ bhajāmi) [Bs. 5.29]

Brahmā is accepting the Supreme Personality of Govinda, Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana. Veṇuṁ kvaṇantam: “He is engaged in playing flute.”

(veṇuṁ kvaṇantam) aravinda-dalāyatākṣaṁ barhāvataṁsam asitāmbuda-sundarāṅgam kandarpa-koṭi-kamanīya-viśeṣa-śobhaṁ govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi [Bs. 5.30]

So take advantage of these books, this knowledge, and this prasādam, this chanting, and be happy and go to Kṛṣṇa. So nice thing. All right. (end)

Prime Duty

Lord Krishna played on His flute on a moon-lit night. The Gopis rushed forth immediately forgetting everything when they heard the flute.

  1. Some left their houses while milching the cow.
  2. Some left their houses when they were serving their husbands with food.
  3. Some did not take down the boiled rice from the fire.
  4. Some did not wait till the milk got boiled.
  5. Some had been giving milk to their children.
  6. Some were taking food.
  7. Some were serving the guests with food.
But they all left their work half-finished. Their clothes, hair and ornaments were all disheveled. They ran to behold Sri Krishna. Krishna was their very Prana and soul. They could not bear His separation even for a second.

Krishna Questions and Gopis Answers

"Welcome, ye great ones! What good can I do for you? Are all safe in Vraja? Tell me the object of your coming here. The night is fearful and wild animals are treading around. Go back to Vraja. This is not the place for women. You have got your mothers, fathers, sons, brothers and husbands. They are searching you. Do not cause pain to anybody. What more, you have now seen this forest adorned with flowers and illumined by the tender rays of the full moon, where the trees and their tender branches, gently moved by the breeze from the Yamuna, stand in all their splendour. Now go back, O virtuous girls, speedily to your house and look after your husbands. The calves and your children are weeping. Go and let them have their drink. If you have come here, forced by your love for me, it is only meet and proper, for all people have their love for me. Devotion to husband is the one great religion for women. They should seek the well-being of their friends and bring up their children. The husband may be wicked, old, diseased or poor. But those who wish for higher Lokas should not give up their husbands. The connection with one who is not the husband is disreputable and unbecoming. You may bear love for me in other ways than by such a near approach. Therefore go back to your houses."

The Gopis were struck dumb for a time. They were overcome with sorrow. They had given up everything for the sake of Krishna and they could ill bear to hear these harsh words. At last they broke forth: "O Lord, it is not for Thee to utter these unkind words. We have given up all objects and sought Thy feet. O Thou, difficult to be reached, do not forsake us but please think of even as the First Purusha thinks of those that seek Moksha. Thou speakest, O Love, of our duties to husbands, sons, and friends as if Thou art a religious teacher, but Thou art Thyself the goal of those religious injunctions. So let them rest in Thee. Thou art the greatest friend of all beings, for Thou art verily their own Self. What do we care for husbands or sons, sources of misery as they are; we are attached to Thee, the constant source of happiness." In these words the Gopis expressed their deepest affection for Lord Krishna. We find in the Gopis complete self-surrender (Atma-Nivedan) in its true sense. They cared not even for their lives. How could they care then for their relatives, friends and cattle?

Krishna Acknowledges Gopis

After all the gopis sang their song of separation, Krsna appeared to them and uttered this verse:

na paraye 'ham niravadya-samyujam
sva-sadhu-krtyam vibudhayusapi vah
ya mabhajan durjara-geha-srnkhalah
samvrscya tad vaù pratiyatu sadhuna

[“I am not able to repay My debt for your spotless service, even within a lifetime of Brahma. Your connection with Me is beyond reproach. You have worshiped Me, cutting off all domestic ties, which are difficult to break. Therefore, please let your own glorious deeds be your compensation.

(Srimad-Bhagavatam, 10.32.22)]

This passage speaks volumes about the love of the gopis towards Krishna and how he acknowledged it. It is the charter that gives the universally glorified sanctity to the spotless Krishna-Bhakti  of the Gopis. Great devotees are not great because they call themselves so (if at all), but because the Lord calls them great!

Krishna to Gopis on Reciprocation

  1. So-called friends who show affection for each other only to benefit themselves are actually selfish. They have no true friendship, nor are they following the true principles of religion. Indeed, if they did not expect benefit for themselves, they would not reciprocate.
  2. Some people are genuinely merciful or, like parents, naturally affectionate. Such persons, who devotedly serve even those who fail to reciprocate with them, are following the true, faultless path of religion, and they are true well-wishers.
  3. Some people, being spiritually self-satisfied, do not reciprocate others' affection because they want to avoid entanglement in mundane dealings.
  4. Other persons do not reciprocate simply out of envy or arrogance.
  5. And still others fail to reciprocate because they are materially satisfied and thus uninterested in new material opportunities.
